Elite Field of Professional Triathletes set to compete in Nation's Escape Triathlon

WASHINGTON, D.C. – (August 8, 2018) IMG, a global leader in sports, events, media and fashion, today announced the field of professional athletes set to compete in the 2018 Nation’s Escape Triathlon taking place on Sunday, September 9. Professional triathlete Andy Potts, the official coach of the Escape Triathlon Series will be competing. Potts represented the United States in the 2004 Olympics, is a seven-time IRONMAN champion, 28-time IRONMAN 70.3 champion and a six-time Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon champion.

 

The pro line-up also includes: 2008 Beijing Olympian Jarrod Shoemaker, current Escape Triathlon Series points leader Cameron Dye, 2017 Nation’s Escape Triathlon champion Sarah Haskins, 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 Costa Rica champion Lauren Goss and more.

 

“I'm excited to return to Washington D.C. and defend my title,” said 2017 Nation’s Escape Triathlon Champion Sarah Haskins. “It is always a special feeling, to swim, bike and run amongst our nation’s awe-inspiring memorials and monuments, it really takes your breath away.”

 

The pros will join nearly 2,000 amateur triathletes for the 13th year of this annual event. Professional athletes have qualified to race through the Escape Triathlon Series. Pros set to compete in the 2018 Nation’s Escape Triathlon include:

West Potomac Park will host the challenging Olympic distance race, which will take participants on a 1.5k swim in the historic Potomac River past the Arlington Cemetery and under the Memorial Bridge; a 40k bike ride past the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, WWII Memorial and Kennedy Center; and on a challenging 10k single loop run past the Jefferson Memorial, National Holocaust Museum, U.S. Mint, Tidal Basin and more. The sprint distance race will feature a 750m swim, a 26K bike ride and a 5k run, along the same course. The Nation’s Escape Triathlon is recognized as a bucket list race for triathletes, featuring one of the only opportunities for athletes to swim in the Potomac River and amid D.C.’s historical landmarks.

 

The Nation’s Escape Triathlon serves as a qualifier for the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. The first-place male and female finisher in each Olympic age group are given access to a coveted entry slot into the 2019 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon (entry fee is the responsibility of the racer).
