Professional Triathlete Program


The 2018 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon will host a total 24 men and 24 women professional triathletes on the railing (starting line) of the San Francisco Belle. The 2017 Escape Series will serve as a qualifying series for professional triathlete entry into the 2018 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

The five-stop 2017 Escape Series coupled with the 2018 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon will offer a pro prize purse of $180,000.*

Professional athlete registration for the 2017 Escape Series opens on January 25th, 2017. Please note that the Escape Series reserves the right to CLOSE professional athlete sign ups prior to the published registration deadline in the event that the allocated professional slots are filled ahead of the deadline*.

  • Surf City Escape: Sunday, April 22nd, 2018 | Pro Registration Closes Thursday, February 8th, 2018

*Race Director for each Escape Series stop will retain three (3) professional athlete “Wild Card” invitations per gender per race to allocate and distribute at his own leisure outside of the outlined deadlines.


Professional Athletes interested in competing in the Escape Series 2017 races will need to contact us at to express interest in an entry for a professional athlete slot and with a scanned copy of their professional license/status card.  We will confirm professional athletes on a first come, first serve basis. Race slots are limited. All confirmed professional athletes who receive an entry will have media obligations attached to their participation.


Eighteen (18) athletes per gender will qualify for the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon through the accumulation of points from the five Escape Series races.  Points will be awarded based on an athlete’s official finish position:

  • 1st Place               10 Points
  • 2nd Place              7 Points
  • 3rd Place              6 Points
  • 4th Place              5 Points
  • 5th Place              4 Points
  • 6th Place              3 points
  • 7th Place              2 Points
  • 8th Place              1 Point

An Escape Series Leaderboard will run continuously on the Official Escape Series website allowing the professional triathletes to track their points and progress.

At the conclusion of the final Escape Series race in 2017, IMG will notify the top eighteen (18) points earners in both genders of their invitation to compete in the 2018 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

IMG will retain six (6) of the total twenty-four pro race slots for “Wild Card” invitations, ensuring the highest-quality representation of professional triathletes competing at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.


2017 Escape Series races will award $20,000 per event - $10,000 per gender

2018 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon will award $80,000 - $40,000 per gender
